The second edition of Sand in Your Shoes, The Daiquiri Dick's Kitchen Workbook, was recently released. This updated version boasts a bigger format, which opens to the desired page with ease and larger print, which makes it easier to read. All the recipes are in both English and Spanish.
Over 100 recipes, photos and great stories about this historic Puerto Vallarta Restaurant and its owners can be found in its pages. Award winning Tortilla Soup, Sesame Crusted Tuna and Vanilla Bean Flan are just some of the long time favorites, plus there are some new additions as well.
The restaurant's innovative menu constantly evolves and is characterized as Mediterranean, Mexican cuisine with Asian influences. Whether it is a main course, appetizer, omelette, tapas, salad, or sandwich, the chefs at Daiquiri Dick's blend the flavors to create interesting combinations, subtle, yet zesty. Over 26 years have passed since owners Peter and Tari Bowman felt the need to do something outrageous like move to a foreign country and experience a new lifestyle. "We have always been a little crazy when it comes to trying new business ventures," says Tari. "I like to think that we are always ahead of the times."
Owning one of the best restaurants in the area is the greatest reward. Peter and Tari often say that they are not reinventing the wheel, the restaurant will continue to evolve and they will continue to push the envelope when it comes to dining experiences in Puerto Vallarta.
What started out as a little hut on the beach where you could get a grilled fish on a stick and a cold beer has changed dramatically. Even though you can still order the fish on a stick and a cold beer, the restaurant's ambiance and menu reflects the ongoing innovations while still holding true to the favorites and traditions. You may not be able to dine there often, but you can always enjoy their food.
The author, Rafael Antonio Nazario, worked as chef and manager of Daiquiri Dick's for seven years. He first produced this book in 2001. Since 2005, he has been living in Australia pursing other interests.
